Week 1 (Oct. 27th)Sheffield
Utd vs Olympiakos
The Greek side, Olympiakos, went on the road for their
first match of the season against a very tough Sheffield
Utd. squad. Although Olympiakos fell 4-2 to the English
team, Manager Esurk Nayr had nothing but praise for his
players. "Other than a few let downs in back, I thought
our boys played very well today," Nayr began. "That
Sheffield Utd. group is a little bigger and stronger than
us, but we still managed to move the ball well against
them and create some good chances. Bruno K. had a fine
first-half in goal and other top-notch performances were
turned in by Drew K. and Martin H. However, my man-of-the-match
goes to Drew V. today. Not only did he score our team's
first goal tonight, but his tenacity gave the Sheffield
defense all they could handle. Heck, I am three times
his size and I'm scared to get in his way!!" Nayr
added.
Olympiakos's second goal was scored by Hunter K. who
ricocheted a perfectly-executed toe-ball off a Sheffield
defender and into the back of the net. When asked about
the goal, Hunter calmly claimed, "I knew I had to
shoot quickly since the defense was closing fast, so I
just let it fly. It's amazing how striking a ball exactly
the way my coach showed me NOT to can result in such great
dividends!" As it turned out, Hunter had several
lady-friends in attendance at Friday night's match.
Olympiakos hopes to rebound next week against another
tough opponent in Italia '06.
Wadadah FC vs
Burn
Ten different players scored for Wadadah in their opening
match. Burn was tenacious the whole game and should not
be taken lightly the rest of the season.
Lyon vs
Racing Santander
DT Houllier welcomed the Real Racing de Santander, Spanish
squad from La Liga, into Stade Gerland. The young Olympique
Lyonnais team came out with energy and conviction.
'The passing was crisp, the finishing was clinical. We
tackled with conviction, we had great determination on
defense. Add to that a sterling effort in goal and you
have home fans leaving with smiles on their faces,' said
DT Houllier.
Houllier was especially pleased that six different players
found their way on to the score sheet.
"I must commend the keeper for Racing, as he was
truly superb. He made a number wonderful saves today,"
remarked Houllier.
Lyon will be at home again next week, when newly promoted
Sheffield United traverse the chunnel to Stade Gerland
from the Premiership.
Liverpool vs
Chelsea
Liverpool’s Cody R. Recorded 5 goals Friday night
(two against each of Chelsea's keepers and one on his
own keeper). Both sides gave a good effort and played
well, but Liverpool's transition back to defense was a
little quicker Friday night and that proved to be the
difference.
