Week 2 (Nov. 3rd)Italia '06
vs Olympiakos
Olympiakos faced another tough opponent this week when
they entered the Olympic Stadium in Rome to take on an
Italian National Team still riding high from its World
Cup championship this Summer. Olympiakos looked to be
in good form early as Bruno K. recorded a hat-trick in
the first half, one goal coming off an absolutely luscious
pass from Drew V. who cut back a well-placed slot pass
to the oncoming Bruno. Manager Esurk Nayr, who arrived
late due to a pre-game press conference discussing details
on security and crowd control had this to say, "I
knew today was an important match and we wanted to take
every precaution to protect the players and ensure a safe
yet challenging playing environment," Nayr stated.
UEFA, Europe's futbol governing body, went so far as to
employ members of the armed services to keep the field
safe and to assist with officiating.
Reckut Digam, Olimpiakos' second in command, took the
reins for most of the game and posted his first official
win in charge of the squad. "The boys got off to
a fast start today. Our only let down in the first half
was when our goalkeeper was waving to his girlfriend in
the stands and a shot went whizzing by the post missing
by inches...he never saw it coming!" Tough play by
"T" (Tanner) and a fine goal by "Big D"
(Drew H.) helped Olympiakos's cause, but Nathan J. earned
"man-of-the-match honors" with several strong
tackles and a consistent defensive performance through
out the match. Nathan's humble response when he discovered
his MVP status was simply, "Can we stop at Dairy
Queen on the way home?"
Lyon vs
Sheffield United
Lyon welcomed newly promoted Sheffield United to Stade
Gerland.
The Lyonnais supporters were buzzing with anticipation,
what would this new Premiership side bring to the match
today. Lyon started quickly pressing the ball, and swiftly
surging forward into attack. Dictating the game with quick
ball movement and tight control, Lyon opened the scoring
with Louise. DT Houillier explained, "Much like the
Brazilians the Lyon players are known by a single moniker."
Futsal debutante, Gigi, opened her seasonal goal account
with a hat trick. Right back Lindsay followed her first
brace, with another brace this game. Summer opened the
late autumn season with a goal at the end of the first
half. Coming out from her libero duties, Grace finished
off the scoring. Nicolette was once again superb in front
of the goal. Assisting her in maintaining a clean sheet,
were the irrepressible Maureen and the fleet footed Boo.
The Olympique ladies entertain SC Freiburg this coming
Friday.
AS Monaco vs
AC Milan
Monaco opened the season on the road against a veteran
AC Milan side. The game was hard fought and well played
by both teams. The first half was evenly played as Monaco
answered each Milan goal with one of their own. Alyssa
and Jordan were the first half scorers. Monaco exploded
in the second half on goals by Kiki, Mackenzee(2), Alex(2)and
2 more by Jordan to give her a hat trick. Ally, Natalie
and Alex(2) also earned assists. The passing was quick
and crisp and a great way to begin the season.
Marseille vs
Juventus
A rematch of the countries involved in the World Cup
finals was held in front of a jeering Italian crowd as
Marseille and Juventus went head to head. Spectacular
goal keeping on both sides kept the score low, and each
goal achieved was only the result of great effort. With
Zdan noticeably absent, the French side was bolstered
by a 4 goal effort from Nichole (a hat trick plus one,
called a "beret" by the French). Laura and Erin
also tallied scores with two assists going to Erin and
another to Megan. No one knows the final score, since
hooligans have stolen all scoring appartus from the stadium,
but Marseille were seen leaving with their heads held
high. Great effort on both sides in a fast paced, well
played match.
Wadadah FC vs
Torino FC
Wadadah and Torino played a spirited match. Wadadah's
multisport athlete, Alex K, showed that soccer is his
true calling by netting a beautiful one touch finish.
Torino's world class goalkeeping kept the match close.
