Week 5 (Dec. 1st)

Olympiakos vs Portsmouth FC

(Athens, Greece) After a disappointing outing in their mid-week draw versus Shakhtar Donetsk, Olympiakos hosted Portsmouth FC in what promised to be another sure test of will in the ever-close race for advancement in the Champions League.

Kyle D., who recently started his own chain of hamburger joints in Omaha called "K-Burgers", opened up the scoring for Olympiakos with a great goal on an assist from Drew V. Hunter K. then scored the first two goals of his eventual hattrick, both on fine assists from Big D. Nathan J. and K-Burger finished the first half scoring with nice goals on fantastic individual efforts.

In the second half, Jack F. and Drew V. each scored early goals. Our NBA correspondant, Big D, described Drew V's footwork that led to his goal as "ankle-breaking." Allen Iverson could not be reached for comment.

Perhaps the highlight of the evening was Jack's record-breaking feat of taking the most shots in a half that hit either the post, crossbar, or goalkeeper. Esurk Nayr was skeptical of Jack's intentions at first. "I really thought that the other team had bribed Jack before the match to give the game away by shooting everywhere but "IN" the goal. Jack is a good kid, but I guess everyone has their price. For all I knew, Portsmouth had offered him a Play Station 3 to throw the match!!" Junior (Drew K.) finished off the scoring with a nice goal of his own and "man-of-the-match" honors were split between Hunter and our NBA correspondant Big D.

Lyon vs Atletico Madrid

The warriors of Atletico Madrid ventured from the friendly confines of their home Vicente Calderón Stadium in Madrid, Spain, to Lyon, France.

Olympique Lyonnais (popularly known as OL, or simply Lyon) has enjoyed a wonderful late fall season.

"The whole Lyon team has played wonderful throughout this session of champions,' said DT Houllier.

"But this evening game is of great concern to me,' DT said as he continued in his pre-match comments, "We are missing several players tonight. Gigi, Summer, Louise and Lauren are all unavailable for this evenings contest. We will be at the bare minimum of players, many of which who will be asked to perform in unfamiliar roles. We face a very difficult task indeed.'

The unfamiliarity was evident from the start, as Lyon went behind early in the match, for the first time this season. Lyon's competitive nature was quickly aroused and the fought back to tie the game, with goal fashioned by Lindsay and scored by Maureen.

The game was now afoot, as the two teams battled for supremacy. Lindsay again provided the pass and Boo provided the goal.

Atletico Madrid were unfazed and created a goal of the own before the end of the half, two all at the break.

At the start of second half, Boo turned from scorer to creator and set up an opportunity for Madeline who returned Lyon to the lead. Madeline was on the beginning side of goal number four as she provides the pass for Maureen to claim her second of the match.

The Spanish lads fought back and closed the gap to one again with a fine effort.

Several sparkling saves from Nicolette in goal and from sweeper Grace kept Lyon in the lead. Grace who had provide many fine passes from the back, finally connected with Madeline late in the game. Madeline put away her second goal of the evening and Lyon walked of the pitch victorious.

"It was great contest between two teams of courage and determination,' remarked Houllier after the match.

Marseille vs Liverpool

Marseille crossed the channel to take on Liverpool at the old Anfield Stadium. The home side took the the early lead but Marseille worked hard to earn a tie at half time as Alyssa found Morgan unmarked in front of the Reds goal. Liverpool picked up the pace in the second half and Marseille were unable to match their speed and power. Goals by Alyssa (from Laura) and Jordan (from Megan) were not enough to offset the Liverpool firepower. It was a hard fought, well played match.

AS Monaco vs Chelsea

Stamford Bridge was filled to capacity as 42,000+ Chelsea fans were anxiously awaiting the match with Monaco. The Blues got off to a quick start with 3 goals before Kiki finished with a heel shot on a pass from Megan and Alyssa made it 2 on a rush through the middle. Chelsea came back with two more tallies before Jordan took a pass from Ally to score just before halftime. The second half was all Chelsea as Monaco searched unsuccessfully for the right player in goal. Monaco kwows they are in for a hard week of conditioning as they couldn't match the physical play of Chelsea.
